Kernkindcentrum Belfort maakt feestje van officiële opening
[Maastricht | woensdag 20 augustus] In Belfort staat een nieuw kernkindcentrum. Vlak voor de zomervakantie trokken kinderen en medewerkers al in hun nieuwe onderkomen aan de Keurmeestersdreef. Woensdag 20 augustus was het tijd voor de officiële opening van het gebouw waarin ook de Emile Weslyschool voortaan zijn thuisbasis heeft. De school was tot aan het begin van de zomervakantie van 2025 tientallen jaren aan de rand van Mariaberg gehuisvest aan de Beeldsnijdersdreef.
"9 jaar geleden begonnen de juffen en meesters na te denken over een nieuwe school. Een paar jaar later waren er al ideeën en nu is het zover. Een mooie, nieuwe en frisse school". Met die woorden sprak Sophie namens de leerlingenraad de genodigden 20 augustus 2025 toe. Onder toeziend oog van ouders, diverse genodigden en uiteraard de leerlingen hees onderwijswethouder Johan Pas samen met 2 kinderen de vlag met het nieuw logo. Leerlingen en directeuren hielden een openingstoespraak en na afloop was er een traktatie voor alle aanwezigen.
Over het kindcentrum
Het nieuwe kindcentrum biedt onderdak aan 2 basisscholen, Basisschool John F Kennedy en de Emile Weslyschool, en kinderopvang Samen Spelen. Daarnaast biedt het gebouw ruimte aan externe (zorg)partners die wanneer nodig, extra ondersteuning aan kinderen kunnen bieden. Dat er niet alleen in stenen gebouwd is, onderstreepten die 3 directeuren – Thessa Paanakker (Samen Spelen), Francis van der Mooren (Emile Wesly) en Marc Houben (Basisschool John F Kennedy): "Ook aan visie, ideeën en samenwerking is de afgelopen tijd gebouwd en dat gaan we nu onder 1 dak samen verder uitvoeren."
Duurzaam
Bij het ontwerp en het bouwen van het kindcentrum is ook veel aandacht geweest voor duurzaamheid. Zo is de nieuwbouw een energie neutraal gebouw (ENG) en heeft het gebouw onder andere een energieopslag- en energieopweksysteem en monitoring dat voldoet aan de gewenste normen en wettelijke eisen voor onderwijsgebouwen. Het kernkindcentrum is een ontwerp van Sylvie Smeets van Architecten aan de Maas.
Integraal Huisvesting Plan (IHP)
De nieuwbouw van kernkindcentrum Belfort maakt onderdeel uit van het zogenaamde Integraal Huisvesting Plan (IHP) van de gemeente Maastricht. Hierin staat beschreven welke scholen er de komende jaren verbouwd worden of een nieuwbouw krijgen. "De realisatie van dit kindcentrum vormt een mooie mijlpaal voor toekomstbestendige en duurzame huisvesting voor het primair onderwijs in Maastricht-West. Goed om te zien hoe de 3 partijen elk met hun identiteit, maar met 1 gedeelde visie zorgen voor een stimulerende en inclusieve omgeving waar kinderen van 0 tot 13 jaar zich kunnen ontwikkelen", aldus wethouder Johan Pas.
Kernkindcentrum Belfort celebrates official opening
[Maastricht | Wednesday, August 20] There is a new kernkindcentrum (USA: school-age care (SAC) program, or child development center) in Belfort. Just before summer break, children and staff already moved into their new facility on Keurmeestersdreef. Wednesday, August 20 marked the official opening of the building that will also be the new home of Emile Wesly School. Until the start of summer break 2025, that school had been located for decades on the edge of Mariaberg at Beeldsnijdersdreef.
"Nine years ago the teachers began thinking about a new school. A few years later there were already ideas, and now it has come to fruition. A beautiful, new, fresh school". With those words, Sophie spoke on behalf of the student council to the guests on August 20, 2025. In the presence of parents, various guests, and of course the students, Education Alderman Johan Pas, together with two children, raised the flag bearing the new logo. Students and principals gave opening speeches, and afterward treats were provided for all attendees.
About the child center
The new child center houses two elementary schools, John F. Kennedy Elementary and Emile Wesly School, and the childcare provider Samen Spelen. The building also provides space for external (care) partners who can offer additional support to children when needed. That not only bricks and mortar have been invested in was emphasized by the three directors — Thessa Paanakker (Samen Spelen), Francis van der Mooren (Emile Wesly), and Marc Houben (John F. Kennedy Elementary): "We have also built vision, ideas, and collaboration in recent times, and now we will carry that forward together under one roof".
Sustainability
Sustainability was also a major focus in the design and construction of the child center. The new building is an energy-neutral facility and features, among other things, an energy storage and generation system and monitoring that meet the desired standards and legal requirements for educational buildings. The core child center was designed by Sylvie Smeets of Architecten aan de Maas.
Integrated Housing Plan (IHP)
The new construction of kernkindcentrum Belfort is part of the municipality of Maastricht’s so-called Integrated Housing Plan (IHP). This plan outlines which schools will be renovated or rebuilt in the coming years. "The realization of this child center is an important milestone for future-proof and sustainable housing for primary education in Maastricht-West. It is good to see how the three parties, each with their own identity but sharing a common vision, provide an inspiring and inclusive environment where children from 0 to 13 years old can develop", said Alderman Johan Pas.
Emile Weslyschool verhuist naar Kindcentrum Belfort
[Maastricht | 14 maart 2025] De Emile Weslyschool verlaat Mariaberg en verhuist naar Belfort. Als je van mening bent dat dit niet helemaal klopt dan heb je gelijk. De school ligt zeer strikt genomen precies aan de rand van Mariaberg en niet ín de wijk. Maar gevoelsmatig was het een school van 'ons' en gaan en gingen er heel wat kinderen uit onze wijk naar deze basisschool. De school heropent dit jaar zijn deuren in het nieuwe Kindcentrum Belfort in een splinkternieuw gebouw dat het deelt met de John F. Kennedyschool. Bestuurlijk blijft de school zelfstandig en valt met basisschool Suringar aan de andere kant van de Maas nog steeds onder Vereniging Suringar.
Voor leerlingen uit Mariaberg betekent het voortaan precies één kilometer verder lopen of fietsen. Na het vertrek in het verlreden van basisschool St. Gondulphus aan de Elisabeth Strouvenlaan en de basisschool naast de Sint Theresiakerk zijn er nog maar weinig scholen over in de directe omgeving. Kindcentrum Oda aan de Pastoor Habetsstraat in de wijk Brusselsepoort en Kindcentrum Aloysius in de binnenstad zijn als enige overgebleven op loopafstand.
De verhuizing van de Emile Weslyschool begon in 2019 als tekst in het Integraal Huisvestingsplan van de gemeente Maastricht en wordt binnenkort werkelijkheid. Dat betekent dat in de loop van 2025 de deuren van het huidige gebouw definitief sluiten. Wat verandert is het gebouw en de locatie van de school, wat blijft is het vast team waarop de school draait. Ook de samenwerking met kinderopvangpartners Samen Spelen en MIK Kinderopvang Kinskörref wordt op de nieuwe locatie voorgezet.
Emile Weslyschool to move to Kindcentrum Belfort
[Maastricht | March 14, 2025] The Emile Wesly School is to leave Mariaberg and move to Belfort in the course of 2025. If you are of the opinion that the elementery school is not situated in Mariaberg strictly speaking, then you are correct. The school is located exactly on the edge of Mariaberg and not in the neighborhood itself. But instinctively speaking the school is 'ours' and a lot of children from our neighborhood went to the elementary school in the past decades and they still do. This year, the school reopens its doors in the new Kindcentrum Belfort in a brand new building it shares with the John F. Kennedy elementary school. Administratively, the school remains independent and, with elementary school Suringar situated on the other side of the Maas, still operates under Vereniging Suringar.
For pupils from Mariaberg it now means walking or cycling exactly one kilometer further away. After the departure of St. Gondulphus elementary school on Elisabeth Strouvenlaan and the elementary school next to St. Theresa's Church, there are only a few elementary schools left in the immediate area. Kindcentrum Oda on Pastoor Habetsstraat in the Brusselsepoort district and Kindcentrum Aloysius in the city center are the only ones left within walking distance.
The relocation of Emile Wesly elementary school started in 2019 as a text in the Integral Housing Plan of the municipality of Maastricht and will soon become a reality. This means that during 2025 the doors of the current building will close for good. What will change is the building and the location of the school, the team on which the school runs will remain, as well as the cooperation with childcare partners Samen Spelen and MIK Kinderopvang Kinskörref.
